"Dark Web" News Service

ProPublica Launches the Dark Web's First Major News Site

Andy Greenberg | January 7, 2016

[Blogger's note: Much misinformation has appeared about the Dark Web, including hoaxes and spoofs. As with all Internet information, don't rely on just one source. Make sure you can find other links backing up a story that appears out-of-place. And don't just rely on sites which simply copy a news article in full from another web site: that isn't corroboration. Typically I try to give at least three sources for any article, no matter how ordinary the story may seem. You'll note that very often writers disagree about a product, and the comments range from praise to severe criticism. The third link below in this group today is especially interesting.]
The so-called Dark Web, for all its notoriety as a haven for criminals and drug dealers, is slowly starting to look more and more like a more privacy-preserving mirror of the web as a whole. Now it’s gained one more upstanding member: the non-profit news organization ProPublica.
On Wednesday, ProPublica became the first known major media outlet to launch a version of its site that runs as a “hidden service” on the Tor network, the anonymity system that powers the thousands of untraceable websites that are sometimes known as the darknet or dark web.

  1. "The name ""darknet"" is apropos. It just goes to show that people are not always ""good."" There's a whole lot of weirdness out there. That being said, I am glad that some people still hold themselves to a higher standard--but I also tend to think that this standard is a learned behavior, and not necessarily a given. At any rate, humans are lead astray rather easily...

Your article is very compelling and gives one plenty of food for thought. Up, useful, interesting."

  3. Mention the dark web and many people summon imagery of a massive, mysterious online criminal underground, where all manner of products and information are bought, sold, and traded, hidden away from the prying eyes of the public and law enforcement.
